The University Band will perform a diverse program that showcases both contemporary and traditional music. The first energetic, driving piece will be “Pervicacity” by American composer and conductor, Jack Stamp. Following that will be a set of four heartfelt musical pieces titled “Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs” by American composer Frank Ticheli, consisting of In Yonder Valley, Dance, Here Take This Lovely Flower, and Simple Gifts. The upbeat piece, “Mock Morris” by Australian composer, arranger, pianist, and visionary Percy Aldridge Grainge, unfolds next. Building on that is the musical piece rooted in Norwegian folk tunes titled “Valdres March” by Norwegian composer Johannes Hanssen. The program continues into the three-movement work titled “Incidental Suite” by the famous American composer, Claude T. Smith, featuring Tarantella, Nocturne, and Rondo. From there, it shifts into “A Little Tango Music” by British composer Adam Gorb. This piece includes three movements, capturing both the anger and elegance of tango. The concert will conclude with “Opening Night on Broadway,” which consists of a collection of Broadway hits featuring music from The Producers, Avenue Q, Spamalot, Wicked, and The Lion King.
